There’s nothing to divide the two options in terms of views, and they both make for interesting walks to the top. Haystacks is long-held as Wainwright’s favourite peak and is where his ashes were scattered after his death in 1991. Alfred Wainwright is probably best known for his Guidebooks but, when the total bibliography is inspected, his writing and, particularly his drawings are seen to be of at least equal importance. From now on, instead of having to organise expeditions to Lakeland from fifty or sixty miles to the south he was right there on the spot. John Burland, founder of the Wainwright Society, wrote and devised a dramatic presentation of his life and works which was presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival on 15 October 2009.

For anyone up for the grade-one scramble up Jack’s Rake on Pavey Ark, the book gives a detailed description of the ascent. Harry Griffin – Lakeland diarist and friend of Wainwright's, who nonetheless disapproved of the damage to the fells that the popular guidebooks could cause.A gentle stroll from Rosthwaite along the River Derwent will make for a good warm-up before visiting Lodore Falls Hotel for lunch or afternoon tea. In addition to the above works, many other books contain previously published illustrations by Wainwright, or whose subject matter has been inspired by his life and works. Some walks, including the Fairfield Horseshoe from Ambleside, and the Kentmere Horseshoe, enable eight Wainwrights to be bagged in one journey. In 1970 he married Betty McNally (1922–2008), a divorcee, who became his walking companion and who carried his ashes to Innominate Tarn at the top of Haystacks. In his book, “A Pictorial Guide to the Lake District Fells, The Southern Fells”, Wainwright personified the landmark atop the highest peak of the Coniston Fells.

But to save you time sifting through his catalogue of routes, we thought we’d bring together our top ten Wainwright Lake District walks, each offering something slightly different, so that, whatever your ability or taste, you’ll be sure to find something to suit you.The revisions were made by Chris Jesty, and the publishers used an imitation font of Wainwright's hand lettering to make the alterations look as unobtrusive as possible. Skiddaw is a photogenic mountain with its patchwork of heather, bracken and scree, and beautiful proportions of steep flanks and gentle slopes. The Wainwright Society was inaugurated in 2002, with the aim of keeping alive the fellwalking traditions and ideas promoted by Alfred Wainwright through his guidebooks and other publications. A more challenging route goes from Patterdale going along the lower part of Link Cove and then surmounting Greenhow End and The Step. But as Uney points out, Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells were meticulous in their description of routes to climb the hills and mountains of the Lake District, but are largely lacking in how to link these peaks in a day’s walk.
