About this deal

In any case - this one gets top marks from me alongside the Blues Mood - I think they are the two real standouts in this range - along with those fuzzes too. The Mini Tube Screamer is very close to the full size TS9 tone, although I readily agree that the best overall sounding Tube Screamer is the 808 variety in either its regular format or extended Deluxe / DX version. When I bought the Strymon Riverside I was hoping that this would be the solution to all my overdrive / distortion needs.

It has a number of really clever toggle selectors which allow you to set the EQ-stack before or after the gain, ramp up the gain multiplier level, and change clipping options. In a lightweight and simple build, the Mooer Hustle Drive Overdrive pedal provides a wide range of harmonic options, just as we have mentioned in our Mooer Hustle Drive Pedal review before. I have the MK1 Channel 3 version which is barely a few months old - a new MKII Channel 3 + 4 version was introduced at NAMM and is imminent, I will of course upgrade immediately when this happens - it’s amazing to have such relatively low-cost access to the signature Diezel sound. There are other mini delay pedals which may offer more high-fidelity tones like the TCE Flashback Mini or F-Pedals Echobandit to name a couple. This pedal is heavily replicated in all manner of varieties, the Ibanez Mini Tube Screamer is perfectly acceptable with its TS9 tones, although not too high output, one better in many ways is the Keeley Red Dirt Mini which came out of all the Keeley Tube Screamer Mods - here with 4 different dip-switch modes. Besides reviewing countless pedals for Total Guitar, he's written guides on how to build your first pedal, how to build a tube amp from a kit, and briefly went viral when he released a glitch delay pedal, the Atom Smasher. The EHX Glove resolves this with an internal charge pump, which bumps the circuit internally from 9V to 18V, from the ‘Super OCD’ modded OCD designed by Fred Briggs. Many guitar players are looking for pedals that they can get to spice up their guitar playing sessions.

Per my recent 4 Sizes Blues Breaker article I'm not aware of much competition in the Mini Blues Breaker stakes. The Movall Minotaur / Tone City Bad Horse are other supposedly great small alternatives, lots of people favour the affordable Elektro-Harmonix Soul Food, which I also have in original and JHS modded varieties. This pedal at hand has two operating modes: HP and LP, both of which have a wide variety of highly accessible tones. If you are a pedal fan like myself, you will know by now what there are 4 universal full-range pedal makers - i.Only con is you know its massed produced in china, so in the back of my head i feel like it will randomly die at a show. I actually have 14 overdrive / fuzz / distortion pedals in my chain at the moment which is extreme, but which is highly unlikely to ever increase.

I’m not sure the mini pedals can quite compete with the full-bore headroom power and thickness of the larger ones here - I’ve still to encounter a small pedal that comes anywhere close to the Diezel. Into a clean Marshall-style amp you can get some dark rhythm sounds with a neck pickup and this setting. These are all the same size, and all have relatively low current draw, although because of their digital nature, many of these are better served by isolated power-supply rather than relying on a OneSpot daisy-chain as I have frequently found out. There are all manner of solutions available here, not one of which will exactly replicate the full frequency range of the amp’s sound, but most of which will get you right in the ballpark. Most of these pedals have also featured / been named in one or more of my previous blogs posts - they include Black Secret, Blues Mood, E-Lady, EchoVerb, Green Mile, Hustle Drive, Mod Factory, Pure Octave, ReEcho, ShimVerb, Soul Shiver and Trelicopter. The Hustle Drive comes with a tone knob, volume, a large white drive knob, and a High Peak and Low peak toggle switch. This is really quite a special pedal, and offers quite a bit more than the Fulltone OCD, but it can handle that as well. You are normally best with mixing and matching things up, and some pedals allow you to layer up different sounds (dual channel / stacking), while others don’t.

In the traditional Fuzz operating style I recommend you use it with both dials dimed - and then you control the saturation with you guitar volume knob. The Wampler Pinnacle / Deluxe also does an excellent job replicating these sorts of tones, as does the outstanding Mad Professor 1 which blends in Plate Reverb too - to give you the complete EVH amp sound, you just need to add phaser for full-on gig-ready effect. The strength of this pedal is that you get a high degree of clarity / tightness right along the scale of distortion.
