Description

It's 200 years since Cinderella found her prince, but the fairytale is over. Sophia knows the story though, off by heart. Because every girl has to recite it daily, from when she's tiny until the night she's sent to the royal ball for choosing. And every girl knows that she has only one chance. For the lives of those not chosen by a man at the ball ... are forfeit. But Sophia doesn't want to be chosen - she's in love with her best friend, Erin, and hates the idea of being traded like cattle. And when Sophia's night at the ball goes horribly wrong, she must run for her life. Alone and terrified, she finds herself hiding in Cinderella's tomb. And there she meets someone who will show her that she has the power to remake her world ...An electrifying twist on the classic fairytale that will inspire girls to break out of limiting stereotypes and follow their dreams! I know girls who dream of the day their invitation arrives, who think of little else. But as I turn it over in my hand, I read the part of the letter that so many of those eager young women miss. Along its outer edge, in a pattern that reminds me of ivy snaking its way up latticework, are words in white script that give a dire warning.

I loved how every time we heard the story of Cinderella, there was a new twist that completely changed my opinion of the earlier versions. It was really cool (and clever) how Bayron managed that. While I was excited about the premise of this book, unfortunately it did not deliver. I loved the representation of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ characters, as this is incredibly important and something we need to continue normalizing and supporting in YA. However, from a story and writing perspective, this book totally flopped for me. years after Cinderella found her prince, girls of age in the kingdom of Mersailles look forward to being sent to the royal ball, where they have a chance to be chosen as brides - or be cast off from society.

Sophia sees living out her life like Lille's society expects her to as this, since the last thing she wants is being a plaything for a husband she could never love and being forever separated from her actual love, Erin. Her life is now forfeit, her only chance is to hide and run but she doesn't know where to go. As the palace guards are chasing her, she finds a hiding place in Cinderella's tomb and this is where she meets Constance. Constance is the last true descendant of Cinderella and is in exile from the kingdom of Lille, she knows the true story of the Cinderella fairytale, but who will believe her?Together the girls must seek out a way to save themselves and their town from the tyrannical King. To do this they must destroy him, but how can two 16 year old girls do this and where do they start? Because this is twisty, bloody bleak, harsh, dark, deliciously disturbing and dystopian version of the fairytale, a unique, creative, refreshing retelling! And I truly devoured it ! It was fun, smart, original , great work! Adaptational Villainy: Prince Charming in the original fairy tale was pretty much Exactly What It Says on the Tin: A gallant prince who genuinely loved Cinderella and helped her escape her step-family's abuse. While in this book, he is little more than a Psychopathic Manchild who viewed Cinderella as his property and killed her in the most cruel, drawn-out way possible when she wouldn't give in to him. He then proceeded to do the same to thousands of innocent women for over a century to stay alive and rule eternally over Mersailles. It’s time for Sophia to attend her first ball, and she’s been dreading this day her entire life. Sophia has nothing but disdain for the tradition. She’s watched the women of Lille forced into loveless and often abusive marriages. According to the laws of the kingdom, a woman has no rights. Once she is married, she becomes the property of her husband.

I also thought that the characters could use some meat on them. I liked the main Sophia and I liked that she wanted to take down the evil patriarchy, but why? Just because she doesn’t like how crappy things are. I wanted to know what really drove her, where her inner strength came from and I wanted to see her character grow more. This was so very similar to the world building because what was there about the characters were nice, but I wanted and needed more. Cinderella is Dead is written in first person from Sophia’s point of view. Sophia is a very intense young woman and that’s reflected in the writing. While the book is a fantasy based on the Cinderella fairytale, there’s nothing fanciful about the story. It’s dark and brooding which matches the intensity of Sophia’s determination. The story is also quite the mystery. Sophia and Constance are tasked with finding out why King Manford has such a hold over the kingdom. The pacing of the plot kept me involved, and even though I solved the mystery before the two main characters, it was fun watching them put the pieces together.

But Sophia doesn't want to be chosen – she's in love with her best friend, Erin, and hates the idea of being traded like cattle. And when Sophia's night at the ball goes horribly wrong, she must run for her life. Alone and terrified, she finds herself hiding in Cinderella's tomb. And there she meets someone who will show her that she has the power to remake her world … Sophia's and Erin's relationship is forbidden under Lille's law, since both of them are supposed to be dutiful wives to whichever man selects them at the royal ball. Erin, Liv & Luke: These are some characters we don’t see that much of, but they are important in their own way. A lot happens around them, and to them, so I can’t say much as I don’t want to spoil you, but I will say that I loved Liv, hated Erin and also really liked Luke! From the beginning, for some reason this never happens, but i never shipped Sophia and Erin, usually if someone likes someone i ship them and if one of the someones changes i change my ship. I'm pretty sure barely made any sense but pls go with it, but in this book it never happened cause i never shipped Sophia and Erin! I WILL ALWAYS TOTALLY SHIP SOPHIA AND CONSTANCE! THEY WERE MEANT TO FIND EACH OTHER!<3

While this started strong for me, with an intriguing premise and set-up, the further I got into the story, the more it lost my interest. Our Sophia is straightforward, brave, a true rebellious who is afraid of speaking from her heart is in love with childhood friend Erin but her mother pushes her to choose a boy, finding an appropriate match to marry at the ball. Of course Sophia rejects to be chosen by a guy she will never feel anything serious! She’s proud to be gay! So this is end of discussion! Together with her new friend, Constance, Sophia vows to return to the kingdom and dismantle the hurtful, unfair and savage system. It may not be easy though, as the King's power stems for a formidable and unusual place.

The story is set in Lille, a small town in the kingdom of Mersailles. The obvious reference to French towns made me laugh a little, I can see people in France acting like this, I’ve seen it with my own eyes and it makes the book so much more poignant. Cinderella is Dead has short, pacey chapters that are suitable for the 14+ reader due to the reasons I mention above. As so many issues are raised in this fantasy story, it would be great for a debate / discussion session in book clubs / intervention groups. Overall, this was a brilliant, raw, poignant and much-needed story about how fairy tales, happily ever after and society are not always what you think, that there is a dark and sinister layer just hidden underneath the surface and sometimes, you just have to go stamp on it. I loved this book from start to finish and I had so much fun reading it with Candyce.

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron is a YA fantasy that takes place 200 years after the death of Cinderella. It’s a fun, feminist take on the popular fairytale. The book empowers and inspires young women to become the heroes of their own stories.Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron, my first cinderella retelling I think, i liked it. I LOVED THE PLOT TWISTS!, THEY WERE LIKE YASSSS! I also loved all the characters!, they were awesome! except for prince charming! 👀🔪 U'll see why! 👀 Cinderella's story - the so-called sacred text which the girls of Lille are compelled to live by - is an indication of how different versions of a story can alter over time and how what is a lie can be considered true. Furthermore, Sophia is prepared to fight for freedom and strive to release the people of Lille from their grinding existence, whatever the cost to herself. She puts her heart on the line to discover the dark secret at the heart of the kingdom. Searching for answers in the dangerous White Forest, she flees the glitzy false sham of a ball where men have attempted to claim her against her will. From the distinctive front cover, celebrating Sophia Grimmins as proud, beautiful, defiant, fierce and brown skinned, to her explosive story inside, Kalynn Bayron reclaims the iconic fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm with her new YA fantasy, Cinderella Is Dead. Groundbreaking, exciting and daring, it reinvents and challenges the beliefs perpetuated by the illusion that every young girl is searching for her Prince Charming who will give her a happily ever after. It's 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl's display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again. Sophia Grimmins takes over the mantle of The Storyteller from the Brothers Grimm and transforms the tale of Cinderella's vilified stepsisters, cruel stepmother and the beneficent magical tree, delivering a blow to the objectification of women by selfish and unworthy men. Her friend Luke is a footnote instead of a major player and has his own reasons for rebelling and attempting to assume the role of protector. Courageous Constance is a fiery foil to Sophia. Deft in sword play, she allures Sophia with her confidence, pride in her identity and belief in herself. This in contrast to Sophia's experiences with her dearest girlfriend, Erin, but her heart remains torn.
