No sugar or yeast is used in the recipe, unlike many liquor mashes. The taste of the liquor is similar to a fruit or grain moonshine. However, cinnamon schnapps like Goldschlager isn’t going to denote hints of dried fruit because you’re going to be getting a blast of the warm, sweet cinnamon. Again, it’s not a schnapps, but it works when you need it. People love the flavor profile because of the blast of cinnamon and subtle hints of apple juice and pepper. Seemingly everyone had it in their liquor collection, says Adrian, and it played a prominent role in a seven deadly sins-themed party she hosted for her friend’s 21st birthday some 16 years ago. It involved a game with something called the “penalty of wrath,” where a shot of Goldschläger, Absolut Peppar and a drop of tabasco were offered as punishment. Herron also recalls the intense cinnamon flavor, but it’s not with any particular fondness. Following one particularly Goldschläger-soaked night, it took years before she could tolerate cinnamon-flavored gum or candy, she says. The spirit base for cordials is often neutral, but it certainly doesn't have to be. A robust spirit like whiskey, for example, can mix beautifully with other flavoring agents. Common flavors include fruits ranging from stone fruit to citrus and berries to nuts, as well as coffee and chocolate and even aromatic spices and seeds. Some liqueurs include a touch of cream to round out the other tasty elements.

When comparing Goldschläger and Fireball, it is important to note that they are two different types of spirits. Goldschläger is a cinnamon-flavored schnapps, while Fireball is a whiskey. Both have their own distinct taste and consistency. Goldschlager 87 proof and 107 proof are the only varieties and the only difference is the 107 is bolder because it has a higher alcohol content and the heat from the cinnamon might be a little more intense. Name So, should you go out and buy a bunch of bottles of Goldschlager and start straining out the gold and trying to turn a profit? The answer is a definitive no. Each 750-milliliter bottle contains approximately 0.1 grams of gold. Schnapps is a liquor of its own, and this alcoholic, adult beverage can take on several forms. Herbal liqueurs, infusions, fruit brandies, and flavored liquor. Schnapps is a name shared among a group of strong liquors made using the process of double distillation of a grain wash or fruit. By the time Wayne left New York City for a decade-long stint in Los Angeles in 1997, Goldschläger was still going strong. And then, suddenly, it vanished. Some have claimed that the tradition of ingesting gold was meant to bring health benefits. Others have claimed that drinking this edible gold is actually very unsafe and could even cause death in some cases. I can’t honestly say whether it was the taste or the fact that they were ingesting precious metals which adds to showing off their extravagant lifestyle and wealth. Goldwasser is still made today. Some describe it as taking a shot of liquor with an Atomic Fireball in your mouth. I’ve always been a big fan of the Atomic Fireball candy so… Cinnamon schnapps is fairly smooth and the impact of the hot, sweet cinnamon masks the flavor of alcohol.

On average, there are approximately 0.1 grams of gold in each 1-liter bottle. 3. Is it possible to have an allergic reaction to Goldschlager? However, different cinnamon schnapps brands will have their own flavor profile and intensities. Goldschlager is incredibly smooth, and the cinnamon hits quite nicely. It’s not as overpowering as some schnapps. Goldschläger is a Swiss cinnamon schnapps that has tiny, yet visible flakes of gold floating in the liquid. The German word Goldschläger means ‘goldbeater’. Not sure if this will make you more valuable after drinking a few glasses, but it cannot hurt to try. On The Nose So, gold isn’t a panacea, but is it even safe to ingest? Could it poison you? Does it have any nutritional value? Common Myths and the Medical Effects of Edible Gold When industry veteran Bo Wayne, 54, got his first bartending gig in 1993 at a gay bar in New York City’s East Village, it was “the city of Goldschläger,” he says, referring to the Swiss cinnamon liqueur’s prominence.

And ..... done! Awesome.

But don’t let the bling fool you – Goldschlager is a serious ingredient that can elevate any drink. Very few alcoholic beverages have developed so much urban folklore around them, which is what makes Goldschlager such an interesting phenomenon. What Is Goldschlager? In 1758 Johann Bernhard Berentzen founded a small distillery in Haselünne, Germany. Berentzen schnapps is still made at “The Berentzen Hof” (House of Berentzen). Goldschläger is a Swiss cinnamon schnapps, with an alcohol content of 43.5% by volume (or 87 proof). It is a liqueur, and contains very thin flakes of gold that are visible in the liquid. It was originally made with an even higher alcohol content of 53.5% by volume (or 107 proof).

Begins quite sweetly with clean, crisp notes of ripe apples. Mid-palate sees burnt sugar and caramel that creates an almost toffee-apple vibe. The finish is warmer with mild spice to give more of a freshly baked apple pie twang. Summary You can add it to clear rum or vodka to give you a similar taste as Goldschlager, gold flakes, and all. How To Drink Goldschlager Liqueur The sweetening requirement is what makes cordials distinct from dry flavored spirits such as gin. In the United States, where “cordial” and “liqueur” are used interchangeably, regulations require that they contain at least 2.5 percent sugar by weight and be made from “fruits, flowers, plants, or pure juices therefrom, or other natural flavoring materials, or with extracts” of those materials. In Europe, cordials refer to non-alcoholic drinks. We use the terms based on U.S. regulations. Goldschläger can be found at retailers and restaurants around the country, says Watson. Goldschlager translates from German to “goldbeater” regarding the profession of beating bars of gold into thin sheets of leaf, which is used in Goldschlager. On top of the mystery behind the origins of the liqueur, there are several myths that have been floating around for years about this cinnamon-flavored, gold-infused schnapps. In the modern era, many of our flawed misconceptions about the medicinal benefits of gold from the past have been exposed through modern scientific investigation. Hopefully, no one in the modern age believes that drinking Goldschlager might give them eternal life, as the alchemists of ancient times might have believed. Besides the seemingly luxurious appearance, the mystery (or thrill) of having to ingest gold flakes adds to Goldschläger’s mysterious appeal. Why? You need to prove if the naysayers are correct about the gold flakes piercing (albeit microscopic) your internal organs to the point where the liqueur would enter directly into your bloodstream and intoxicate you faster than usual. The gold flakes might appear intimidating if you are drinking this for the first time. But your worries are unwarranted as there’s no unusual ritual to be performed prior to drinking this, like rimming of shot glasses or any chasers needed. Just serve this chilled at all times and you’re all good.

Jungfrau Herbal Schnapps takes inspiration from the story of the Meyer brothers who wanted to scale the Swiss Bernese Mountains, known as the Jungfrau. In 1811 each had a flask of fermented herbs and spices to keep their spirits up on their arduous journey. Regulations allow cordial producers creative license with not only the spirit and flavoring agent, but also how they’re incorporated. Some add flavoring agents after distillation by one of several methods. Infusion involves steeping the flavor source; maceration entails more aggressive crushing of the flavor components before steeping; percolation pumps water or spirits over the ingredients to extract flavors. Finally, flavor can be added by compounding, simply adding the flavoring extract to the spirit. Heartier flavoring agents such as seeds and flowers may be distilled along with the distillate, often for the second distillation, similar to the gin-making process. Still, Goldschläger is far from extinct. In fact, this March, Sazerac introduced a new iteration, Goldschläger 107. At 107 proof, a nod to the spirit’s original 100-plus proof formula, it seems distinctly hardcore.

Goldschlager

While most people of legal drinking age have passed a bottle of the gold-flaked drink on a liquor store shelf, very few people seem to know much about how it came to be that this mysterious brand started putting real gold into their product. This cinnamon whiskey may not be a schnapps, but it makes a great alternative for those who want the cinnamon flavor but also like whiskey. The flavor profile is more like a hot cinnamon candy like the Atomic Fireball. Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey
