About this deal

Thank you to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing and Laura Marshall for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Just read the numerous threads on Mumsnet regarding the lack of transparency and exploitation of children by Instamums, but I digress. Memories that include her own dark secrets – secrets that threaten to destroy her carefully constructed life. Now though, I’d be grateful for marketing spam, and I long to go back to the mild tedium of a few minutes ago. However the editing was a bit sloppy, I can’t ever remember reading a book where I heard the narrator clear their throat, and that did happen in this book also a few lines were repeated, clearly this is not the narrator‘s fault, I was just surprised.

This book had us guessing right from the very start and we had a few out there interesting theories adding some laughter to our discussion. The story then brilliantly alternates between 1989 and 2016, which the author does quite effectively. It also can serve as a warning to those who post pictures, and expose details of their lives on Facebook. She’s been hovering at the edge of my consciousness for all of my adult life, although I’ve been good at keeping her out, just a blurred shadow in the corner of my eye, almost but not quite out of sight. There are rumours surrounding Maria's transfer to her new school, and of course Louise's friends are happy to exaggerate, and elaborate on these rumours. And knowing the extent of the dominating relationship she had with him in the past, I don't understand why she's still all a-tremble in his presence.

For me Facebook is a way of connecting with people with whom I'd otherwise wouldn't be able to keep in touch, like some of my school mates, or friends who live abroad. Goodreads Librarians are volunteers who help ensure the accuracy of information about books and authors in the Goodreads' catalog. Louise tried very hard in high school to fit in with the popular crowd, this led her to do something that she has felt guilty about ever cents, and now it has come back to haunt her. Women who lived that life at school – who felt like they existed only on the periphery of the popular crowd – are likely to emphasise with her.Unfortunately, its ending was a major let down and I can’t see me using this as a recommendation when someone asks. I move over and open one of the French windows, feeling the need for fresh air but an icy blast slams it shut again. I will try to get my hands on any book that has social media at the heart of it, and "Friend Request" fit the bill perfectly.

I don’t even know if there is such a thing as the truth when it comes to relationships, or only versions of it, shaped by love and fear and the way we lie to ourselves and others. She admits that she has no true friends and still seems hung up on her ex, who now has a new (younger) wife and a new baby. Well, it would seem Louise, and her group of friends back in high school, may have, in some way, been complicit in Maria’s death. You really see the strength in Louise form as you're taken into the story and by the end of the novel you realize that although her life was littered in bad judgement and mistakes there is a certain strength in not letting the past define your present. My only complaint is that the character of Louise isn’t that likeable, so I wasn’t really rooting for her like I do with most characters.

Her entire adult life, Louise has known if the truth ever came out, she could stand to lose everything.Actually, I wasn't too happy with the way "grand finale" was resolved, so easily and kind of unlikely. The ending is an ugly shock, not my favorite ending of all time, but it definitely is a plausible one.
