About this deal

For this reason, if you like the look of this bag I think getting a Fairview/Farpoint 40 would make more sense. However, if you can make do with the simple daypack of the Farpoint 55, and you don’t mind that certain features have been moved from the main pack to the daypack, then the fact that they’re designed to work perfectly together could still make the Farpoint 55 a great choice. I use a Kestrel 38 which is a great size for carry-on but still rugged and comfortable enough for serious trekking. I’m similarly 6’5″ tall and need a versatile pack suitable for general travel in Europe and Asia, trekking the Camino, on and off trains, etc. The main compartment is quite large, so we were able to pack a significant amount of stuff in there, and it comes complete with compression straps to ensure everything is kept in place.

The daypack came in handy most days, although the smaller size does lead to overpacking and, as mentioned above, the mesh pouches for water were of minimal use. Some travelers put their towels or dirty laundry in it, I didnt find this pocket useful and it stayed empty most of the time.

The Osprey Fairview 55 Backpack, sister pack to the men’s Farpoint 55, is the middle ground “best of both world’s” pack slotting between the Fairview 40 and Fairview 70 backpacks from the Osprey backpacking line. I will be headed to Ireland from the US for a few weeks of travel and the Farpoint 55 sounds perfect. My Farpoint has been my trusty companion for years, and it’s held up incredibly well, even with daily use for my work commute. Also, my back is not the strongest (but I am working on it), so a comfortable backpack that distributes the weight well is crucial for me. I bought this bag based on multiple recommendations for “being one of the best” for long term travel (and your review was definitely a big part of my decision to purchase).Like the Farpoint, the Osprey Fairview is a great backpack for those long walks to your next hostel or when you have no choice but to carry your luggage around with you. But when I tried to fit in a camera cube (a TropicFeel camera cube in this case) it was too tight, so this won’t be the pack for you if you carry a camera with several lenses. Other features include extra-chunky zips to the main compartment that can also be locked for additional security, internal and external compression straps to hold everything in place during transit, a large front pocket for items you need quick access to, an external zipped pocket for toiletries and padded top and side handles for carrying the thing about.
