About this deal

The Fujifilm X-E2 is a digital rangefinder-style mirrorless camera announced by Fujifilm on October 18, 2013. And using the manual exposure system mentioned in this article is by reading the light from the scene and manually setting the values, or by adjusting the film speed, aperture and shutter value according to the in-built camera exposure values ie a needle point or a graph telling you the correct exposure that you then set by adjusting camera settings or by the histogram? The Fujifilm X-E2's auto-focusing speed is further improved on the previous model, with a quoted fastest auto-focus time of just 0.

If a friend had asked me to borrow the X-E2 I would’ve said, “Sure, if I can borrow your girlfriend,” because that’s how it feels. Personally, I would prefer some weather sealing for my type of shooting, since I do shoot in extreme conditions quite a bit. Lastly, Program mode can be set by setting both the top dial on the camera and the dial on the lens to “A”. Do not copy, modify or re-post this article or images without express permission from SLR Lounge and the artist. I had to speak to someone at Fuji due to the fact that I’m not a camera engineer, and I didn’t understand what the significance of a Bayer pattern RGGB was.I kept my Nikon lenses because I love Nikon and I figured they would come out with something I like sooner or later. What I found perplexing and irritating, and what I still can’t figure out is why I’m so bad at using the otherwise very natural-feeling manual exposure mode with the X-E2.

In the case of exposure compensation dial, when doing such time-critical types of photography as street, perhaps even a touch too good. While the dial shows shutter speed increments in full stops, do not worry – you can still go in smaller 1/3 stop steps simply by pressing the Left and Right buttons on the back of the camera.AUTO ISO allows one to set the top and bottom speeds, and the shutter speed below which the ISO is increased. I have been the owner of an X-E2 for a couple weeks now and it has been quite the learning curve from using Canon exclusively for the last eight years.

There's usually no Program shift available most ways that you can set the camera, but that's not a problem, since all you need to do is flick the aperture or shutter dial instead. Noise control looks much better than the M9 can produce at the same ISO value, not that I care personally, but worth a mention here in the review. Great highlight rendition; the Auto Dynamic Range feature really helps hold the highlights regardless of the conditions. The almost all-metal X-E2 is better-built than a Nikon D4, and with the X-E2's dedicated aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation dials, handles much faster than today's DSLRs. A competent photographer learns to see a near correct exposure from the scene in front of him and sets the controls accordingly, whether that is by utilising the fully manual controls or by using aperture priority with added exposure compensation or by other means ie the laborious use of the histogram – take the shot, check the image on the camera back, check the histogram, dial in the compensation go to retake the shot and OH, the decisive moment has gone – dow!

I don’t think most will miss the inability to use the screen as a touch screen, but I think having a tilting screen would have been beneficial. Side note, if you want a capable trifecta of compact street photography type cameras, the picture below may be the three amigos for you.

Being selfish, I can say that I'd definitely like to add the X-E2 as a second tier camera that compliments my main Leica system. If I'm to make one point in this review, it is simply this: You cannot fully replace a Leica M rangefinder system with any other camera system. Although RAW shooting at boosted ISO levels (100, 12,800 and 25,600) is still not there, Fuji fixed the Auto ISO feature to allow setting the minimum shutter speed. Keep in mind that I have switched to using an M8 and M9 rangefinder as my main camera system of late.
