Rules for motorways, including rules for signals, joining the motorway, driving on the motorway, lane discipline, overtaking, stopping and leaving the motorway. It also has handy tips to keep new drivers safe in the first 12 months after removing their L-plates. This includes positioning themselves in the centre of their chosen lane, where they feel able to do this safely. Many of the rules in the code are legal requirements, and if you disobey these rules you’re committing a criminal offence.

The hierarchy places those road users most at risk in the event of a collision at the top of the hierarchy. You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions about when and how to use the self-driving function safely.

But those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others. A parallel crossing is similar to a zebra crossing, but includes a cycle route alongside the black and white stripes. While a self-driving vehicle is driving itself in a valid situation, you are not responsible for how it drives. You MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing, and to pedestrians and cyclists on a parallel crossing (see Rule 195). None of this detracts from the responsibility of ALL road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, to have regard for their own and other road users’ safety.
